A washing machine hose lets go at six in the morning, or a compression joint under the bathroom floor gives way while you are at work, and by the time anyone notices, the carpet in two rooms is soaked through to the underlay. The standing water is only half the problem. What happens over the next 48 hours decides whether that carpet dries out and goes back into service, or whether it comes up and leaves in a skip along with the underlay and, in the worst cases, the skirting boards.
This is the sequence we work through on emergency water damage call-outs, and most of the early steps are things you can start yourself before anyone arrives.
Stop the water and make the room safe
Nothing else matters until the source is off. For a burst pipe or a failed joint that means the internal stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cloakroom or at the cellar head in older Manchester terraces. For appliance leaks, isolate the valve behind or beneath the machine rather than wrestling the whole unit out and losing another five minutes. If you cannot find the stopcock and water is still coming, the external stop tap under the pavement plate outside your boundary can be operated by your water supplier, and it is worth knowing where yours is before you ever need it.
Then think about electricity. Water tracks along the underside of a carpet far further than the visible wet patch suggests, and extension leads, floor sockets and under-carpet cabling are common in home offices and lounges. If water has reached a socket, a floor box or any appliance flex lying on the floor, isolate that circuit at the consumer unit before you walk on the carpet. If the water has come down through a ceiling and lighting is involved, treat the whole room as live until the circuit is off.
Once the room is safe, get weight off the wet carpet. Lift furniture onto blocks or foil pads, take up rugs so they are not sitting on saturated pile, and move anything with a stained or unsealed timber base. Wooden legs and metal castors bleed colour and rust into damp fibre within hours, and those marks are far harder to remove than the water itself. Work out what water you are dealing with
Not all water damage is the same job, and the category dictates whether a carpet can be saved at all. The restoration industry works to three broad categories and we assess this on arrival, before any equipment comes off the van.
Clean water
Water from a mains supply pipe, a header tank, a burst radiator feed or a leaking washing machine inlet hose. It carries no meaningful contamination at the point it escapes. Carpet and underlay soaked in clean water and dealt with quickly are the best case, and the large majority of these floors are recoverable.
The catch is that clean water does not stay clean. Once it has passed through a ceiling void, picked up dust and plaster, sat inside underlay at room temperature for a day or two, or run across a floor that has been walked on repeatedly, it degrades. A clean water loss left for 48 hours is treated as grey water.
Grey water
Discharge water carrying detergent, food residue, soil or organic matter. Washing machine and dishwasher outlet leaks, shower tray and bath overflows, aquarium spills and water that has run through a contaminated ceiling void all sit here. Carpet can often still be saved, but it needs full extraction, a sanitising treatment and controlled drying rather than a rinse and a fan.
Black water
Sewage, drain backflow, water from a blocked soil stack, and floodwater that has entered from outside across ground, roads or gardens. This water carries pathogens, and it is the one category where we will nearly always recommend that carpet and underlay are removed and disposed of rather than cleaned in place. Textile is porous, the backing traps contamination, and the saving is not worth the risk. Hard floors, skirtings and the sub-floor can be cleaned and sanitised properly. Carpet generally cannot be brought back to a safe standard.
Why the first 24 to 48 hours decide the outcome
Damp textile at normal room temperature is close to an ideal growing medium. Mould spores are present in every building in ordinary numbers and the one thing they lack is moisture. Give them a saturated underlay in a warm, closed room and colonies can begin to establish within a day or two, usually starting on the underside of the carpet and on the sub-floor where nobody is looking. By the time there is a visible mark or a musty smell in the room, growth has been under way for a while.
Three other things run on the same clock. The latex adhesive holding the primary and secondary backings of a tufted carpet together softens and delaminates, which is what causes rippling and that loose, papery feel underfoot. Jute backings and hessians release tannins that wick up the pile as the carpet dries, leaving yellow-brown patches that need a separate specialist correction. And gripper rod pins begin to rust, marking the carpet in a fine line around the perimeter of the room.
None of that is reversible by waiting. It is why we treat a wet carpet as an emergency rather than a booking, and why the honest answer to whether it can be left until the weekend is almost always no.
What you can usefully do before help arrives
- Blot standing water with towels, changing them often, working from the edges of the wet area inwards so you do not spread it further.
- Open internal doors so air can move between rooms, and put a fan on the room if you have one.
- Lift small furniture out of the room entirely rather than shuffling it to a dry corner of the same carpet.
- Photograph everything before you move it, with the extent of the wet area clearly visible.
- Set the heating to a steady moderate temperature rather than turning it fully up.
There are a few things worth avoiding. A domestic vacuum is not a wet vacuum and using one on standing water will destroy the motor at best. Heat on its own, with no dehumidification, simply drives moisture into the air and then into plaster, joinery and timber elsewhere in the house. Towels left down overnight put sodden cotton back against the pile and slow everything down. Opening every window is also not the reliable fix people expect in this part of the country, because outdoor air through a Manchester autumn frequently carries more moisture than the air you are trying to replace.
Extraction is where the water actually leaves
The single biggest difference between a carpet that dries and one that does not is how much water is physically removed on the first visit. Air movement and dehumidification deal with residual moisture. They are not a substitute for extraction. A saturated wool or polypropylene carpet with foam underlay beneath it holds a surprising volume of water per square metre, and no amount of fan time shifts that at any useful speed.
We extract with weighted heads that press pile and underlay together so water is drawn up from beneath, working slow overlapping passes rather than the quick strokes used in routine maintenance cleaning. Where the underlay is staying down, a sub-surface tool lets us pull water through the carpet from the layer below without lifting it. Where the loss is heavy, we lift a corner, take the underlay out and extract carpet and sub-floor separately, which is faster and far more reliable. That approach is the core of our water damage carpet cleaning work, and it is why an emergency visit looks nothing like a standard clean.
Controlled drying rather than open windows
Once the free water is out, drying becomes a controlled process with numbers attached to it. We set air movers to push air across and under the carpet, often floating a corner so air passes beneath the backing, and we run dehumidifiers so that moisture leaves the room rather than migrating into walls and joinery. Readings are taken from carpet, underlay, sub-floor and, where relevant, the base of the walls, then repeated on each visit so the fall can be tracked rather than guessed at.
That structured approach matters more than any single piece of equipment. The Property Care Association makes the same point in its guidance on repairing flood damage, stressing that a thorough evaluation should be followed quickly by a properly directed drying strategy, and that reinstatement should only be undertaken once the building is dry enough to take it. Its advice on flood damage repair is worth reading if your loss has spread beyond the carpet into plaster, floors or skirtings.
Manchester housing stock makes the point sharper. Suspended timber floors over ventilated voids are common in the city terraces and inter-war semis, and water that gets past the carpet ends up in that void where it dries slowly and quietly. Solid concrete and screed floors in newer flats and mill conversions hold moisture for weeks and will keep feeding it back into a replacement carpet if the sub-floor is not dried and tested first.
Underlay is usually the real problem
Carpet is a comparatively open textile and, once the water is out of it, it dries reasonably well. Underlay does not. Polyurethane foam and crumb rubber underlays behave like a sponge with a closed skin, holding water in the body of the material where air movement cannot reach it. A carpet that feels dry underfoot with a saturated underlay beneath it will smell within a week and will re-wet the carpet from below.
On most losses of any size we take the view that underlay is a consumable. It is inexpensive relative to the carpet, replacing it removes the largest reservoir of water in the whole floor build-up, and it lets us get air directly onto the sub-floor. Trying to keep wet underlay to save a modest cost is the most common reason a water damaged room fails to dry properly and comes back to us a month later smelling musty.
Dry or replace, and how the decision gets made
We work through a short set of questions on site, and we would far rather tell you a carpet is finished than take payment for cleaning something that will never recover.
- Category of water. Black water means removal in almost every case, regardless of how new the carpet is.
- Time elapsed. A clean water loss found within hours is a different job from the same leak discovered on return from a fortnight away.
- Backing condition. If the secondary backing has delaminated across an area, the carpet will ripple permanently even after it dries.
- Construction. Wool and good quality tufted carpets tolerate wetting far better than cheap felt-backed goods, and natural floorcoverings such as sisal, seagrass and coir rarely survive a soaking at all.
- Staining and wicking. Cellulosic browning, rust marks and dye migration from furniture are often correctable, but each one adds time and cost.
- Value against replacement. If restoration approaches the cost of new carpet and underlay fitted, replacement is the sensible call and an insurer will usually see it the same way.
Cleaning and sanitising once it is dry
Drying is not cleaning. Water leaves behind whatever it was carrying, spread evenly through the pile, along with the soil that was already in the carpet and has been mobilised and redeposited at the edges of the wet area as tide marks. A grey water loss also leaves organic residue that will keep feeding odour long after the moisture readings have come back to normal.
Once the readings confirm the floor is genuinely dry, we return and clean it properly, with a hot water extraction pass, a sanitising treatment matched to the category of water, an odour neutraliser where the smell warrants it, and the pile groomed and set as it dries. In practice this is a full carpet deep cleaning visit rather than a light freshen up, because the point is to reset the carpet to a known clean state, not to tidy the visible half of it.
Documenting the damage for your insurer
Almost every escape of water claim turns on evidence gathered in the first day, which is exactly when nobody feels like taking photographs. Photograph the source, the standing water, the full extent of the wet area and every affected item before anything is moved or lifted. Photograph serial numbers and labels on damaged goods. Keep the failed hose, valve or section of pipe if it can be removed safely.
Do not dispose of removed carpet and underlay until your insurer confirms they do not need to inspect it. If disposal cannot wait on hygiene grounds, cut and keep an offcut that shows construction and colour. Ask whoever attends for written moisture readings and a dated record of what was extracted, what equipment was installed and how long it ran, because that record is what supports a restoration claim rather than an argument about whether the work was needed. Getting the room back into use
The pattern that works is simple enough. Stop the water, make the room safe, remove as much moisture physically as you can, then get proper equipment in the same day rather than the following week. Carpet that has been under clean water for a few hours and reaches full extraction quickly is usually saved. Carpet that has sat for four days under a slow leak behind an appliance, with foam underlay holding water against a chipboard floor, rarely is.
