It is the largest soft surface in most homes, it collects everything that falls out of the air, and it is the one thing you cannot put in a washing machine. That instinct is not wrong, but it is not the full picture either. Carpet does hold house dust mite allergen. House dust mites are microscopic relatives of the spider. They do not bite, they do not carry disease and they are not a sign of a dirty house. They live wherever there is warmth, moisture and a supply of shed human skin, which describes almost every occupied room in the country. The thing people react to is not the mite itself. It is a group of proteins found in mite droppings and in the broken fragments of dead mites.

Those particles are extremely small and extremely light. When a floor is walked across, a sofa is dropped onto or a rug is shaken out, they lift into the air, stay suspended for a while and then settle again. That is why symptoms so often arrive with activity rather than at rest. A blocked nose on waking, a sneezing fit halfway through the hoovering, a tight chest after an afternoon spent on the living room floor with the children.

A carpet behaves like a filter laid flat on the floor. It has a vertical structure, with face fibre on top, a primary backing beneath that, then underlay and finally floorboards or screed. Gravity does the rest. Depth matters. A deep cut pile or a chunky wool twist has far more internal volume than a low profile loop, so it can hold considerably more before it looks dirty. That is worth saying plainly. A carpet holding a heavy allergen load can look perfectly presentable, because the material doing the harm is colourless and sits below the visible surface.

Position matters as well. The reservoirs are rarely in the middle of the room. They are along skirting boards, under the bed, behind the sofa, in the corners where the vacuum head turns rather than travels, and in bedrooms generally, because skin scale falls most heavily where people undress and sleep. Traffic lanes often look the worst while holding less mite allergen than a quiet perimeter, simply because they get cleaned more often and stay drier underfoot.

There is one more layer to this. Household soil is not only skin and dust. It includes greasy residue carried in on shoes and a fine aerosol of cooking oil that drifts out of the kitchen and settles everywhere. That residue is slightly sticky, so it binds fine dust into the fibre. Once dust is bound in that way, suction alone will not lift it, no matter how expensive the machine.

None of that is exotic advice, but it is the part most households skip, and no amount of cleaning will hold its benefit in a room that stays damp.

What vacuuming does and what it does not

Vacuuming is genuinely worth doing, and doing weekly. It is simply worth being clear about which half of the problem it addresses.

What a good vacuum does well:

  • Removes loose surface dust, hair, grit and fibre before it is trodden further down
  • Removes shed skin scale, which is the mite food supply, so it slows population growth over time
  • Lifts a proportion of allergen from the upper part of the pile, particularly with a powered brush bar and slow passes

What it does not do:

  • Reach allergen that has settled against the backing or migrated into the underlay

Technique changes the result more than headline suction figures do. Slow overlapping passes in two directions lift far more than a quick sweep, and the first pass over a given strip is always the least productive. A HEPA filter matters because agitation puts fine allergen into the air, so a machine that leaks is redistributing the problem rather than capturing it. Where possible the person with the allergy should not be the one vacuuming, and the room is better left to settle with a window open for a while afterwards.

Where hot water extraction changes the picture

Hot water extraction is the method most people mean when they say steam cleaning. In practice it is a four stage process. The carpet is vacuumed thoroughly, then pre-sprayed with a detergent suited to the fibre and left to dwell so the residue holding the soil starts to break down. The pile is agitated to work that solution through the fibre. Finally hot water is injected under pressure and recovered immediately by a powerful vacuum in the same stroke.

That last stage is the one that matters for allergy. The heat and the solution release allergen from where it has bonded to the fibre, and the recovery vacuum then removes it from the property in the waste water rather than moving it somewhere else in the room. It also flushes out a large share of the skin scale that feeds the mite population, so it works on both halves of the problem at once. There is an honest caveat that we would rather state ourselves. Done badly, this method makes things worse. Correctly executed extraction leaves the pile damp rather than wet, and with airflow and a little heat it should be dry within hours rather than days. Ask about drying time before anyone starts, and plan the job for a day you can ventilate the room.

So do carpets make asthma worse

The straightforward public health answer is that hard flooring is easier to clean, and for someone with a confirmed dust mite allergy, replacing carpet in the bedroom is a reasonable option to consider. That advice exists for a good reason and we are not going to argue against it.

The picture in a real home is more mixed. Carpet acts as a reservoir, and a reservoir binds particles and keeps them out of the breathing zone between disturbances. On a hard floor the same dust sits loose on a smooth surface and lifts into the air with every footstep and every door opening. Which arrangement produces fewer symptoms depends heavily on how thoroughly the floor is actually cleaned and how often. A neglected hard floor with a rug on it and curtains at the window is not obviously better than a carpet that is vacuumed weekly and extracted properly once or twice a year.

If you are already carpeted, ripping it all out is a significant spend with an uncertain return, particularly if the room still has heavy curtains, soft furnishings and a condensation problem. Get the humidity under control, get the cleaning routine right, and judge the result. If symptoms remain severe after that and the allergy is confirmed, then changing the bedroom floor becomes a sensible next step rather than a first guess.

A workable routine for an allergy prone home

Consistency beats intensity here. A modest routine that actually happens will outperform an ambitious one that collapses by February.

Every week

  • Vacuum all carpeted rooms with a HEPA filtered machine, slowly, working the perimeter as well as the middle
  • Wash bedding at the hottest temperature the fabric allows
  • Open windows for a spell each day, even briefly in winter, and run extractor fans while cooking and bathing

Every month

  • Move the sofa and the bed and vacuum the floor beneath and behind them

Twice a year

Late spring and early autumn tend to work well.
